Privacy Policy

We collect as little as we can. Your footage never leaves your computer, and we don't sell personal data.

Who we are

Narrative Node ("we", "us") makes Navigator, a plugin for Premiere Pro, and Sentinel for Narrative Node, the small background app that builds its thumbnails. For the personal data described on this page, we decide why and how it is used, with two exceptions that are named below: Lemon Squeezy, which takes payments, and the services that deliver this site. Write to [email protected] with any privacy question or request.

What we collect, and why

When you visit this website

Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes your IP address and the details of each request, such as the page and your browser type, so it can deliver the site and keep it secure. The typefaces and images are served from the site itself. Your browser keeps copies of the site's images and fonts so pages load faster. That is routine, it doesn't identify you, and you can clear it in your browser settings.

Analytics on this website

This site uses Google Analytics, a service from Google, to see how it is used: which pages are visited, how visitors arrive, and roughly what device, browser and country they come from. The first time you visit, a banner asks whether we may count your visit. Until you choose, Google Analytics stores nothing on your device. Google still receives your IP address and the page you opened, as any server does when your browser contacts it, but nothing that follows you from one visit to the next. If you accept, Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser to tell one visit from another. If you decline, those cookies are not set. We use the results only in aggregate, to improve the site. We don't use Google Analytics to show you advertising, and we don't combine this data with your name, email address or anything you bought.

Your choice is remembered in your browser, and you can change it at any time with Cookie settings in the footer of any page. Declining also removes the Google Analytics cookies this site set earlier. You can also refuse cookies in your browser, or install Google's browser add-on. The site works the same either way. Google handles this data under its own privacy policy.

When you use the "Notify me" form

We keep your email address and the time you signed up, on Cloudflare's storage, to write to you once when the next plugin is ready. You are agreeing to that by submitting the form. We keep the address until we have sent that message or you ask us to delete it, whichever is first. You can withdraw at any time by emailing us.

When you buy Navigator

Lemon Squeezy is the merchant of record for every sale. It collects your name, email, billing details, payment details and any tax information, and it handles the payment, tax and invoices. For that part, Lemon Squeezy is responsible for your data under its own privacy policy. We receive your name, email address and what you bought, plus your license key, which we need to support you. We never see your card details.

When Navigator checks your license

When you enter a license key, and again about once a day, Sentinel sends it to Lemon Squeezy to confirm that the license is valid. It sends your license key and a label for your computer, made of the computer's name, the operating system and a short code derived from the machine. Lemon Squeezy uses the label to count your computers against the 2 your license allows. Sentinel keeps the key, your name and email as Lemon Squeezy returned them, and the dates of the trial and the last check in a protected file on your computer.

When Sentinel updates itself or sets up

Sentinel reads a small version file on GitHub about every six hours to see whether a newer Navigator exists. On the first run it downloads ffmpeg from GitHub and checks it against its published checksum. GitHub sees your IP address and the request, as any web server would. We don't receive that information.

What stays on your computer

Your footage, projects, thumbnails, previews, the index of file names and folders that Sentinel builds, and its log files all stay on your computer. The Navigator plugin and Sentinel have no telemetry, and we can't see any of it. The analytics described above apply to this website only, not to the software. Your ratings and marks are kept in Premiere Pro and your project.

When you contact us

Messages sent to our addresses pass through Cloudflare, which delivers them to the mailbox where we read and answer them. Cloudflare handles the content only to deliver it, and may keep technical delivery records such as the sender, the recipient, the time and the result. We keep your message and anything you attach so we can help you and keep a record of what we said. A log from Settings › Save log can include file names and folder paths from your computer, so check it before you send it and remove anything you'd rather we didn't have.

Why we are allowed to use your data

If the EU or UK data protection law applies to you, we rely on these legal bases:

  • Contract. To provide your license and the software you bought, including the license checks.
  • Legitimate interests. To keep the site and the software secure, to answer your messages and to prevent misuse of license keys.
  • Consent. For the "Notify me" email, and for the analytics cookies described above, which you can withdraw at any time.
  • Legal obligations. To keep records we are required to keep, such as for tax.

Who receives your data

We use a few providers to run the site and the software. They act for us or, in Lemon Squeezy's case, for themselves:

  • Lemon Squeezy for payments, tax, invoices and license checks. See its privacy policy and its Data Processing Agreement.
  • Google for Google Analytics on this site. It receives your IP address and details of your visit, and, if you accept, sets cookies in your browser. See its privacy policy.
  • Cloudflare for hosting this site, storing "Notify me" addresses and delivering the emails sent to our addresses. It processes that data under its own data processing terms.
  • GitHub for the version file and the ffmpeg download.
  • Our mailbox provider, where we read the messages you send us and write our replies.

We don't sell your personal data, we don't run advertising on this site, and we don't use your data to profile you. We may disclose it if the law requires us to.

Transfers outside your country

Some of these providers process data outside the country where you live, including in the United States. Where the law requires a safeguard for that, they use an approved one, such as standard contractual clauses.

How long we keep it

  • Site analytics: for the retention period set in our analytics account, and never longer than 14 months, the longest Google Analytics allows.
  • "Notify me" addresses: until we have sent the announcement or you ask us to delete the address.
  • Order and license records: for as long as your license is active, and afterwards for as long as we need them to support you or to meet tax and accounting rules.
  • Support emails: for as long as it takes to help you, and then as long as we need a record of it. Delivery records kept by Cloudflare follow its own retention periods.
  • Data that stays on your computer: until you delete it. Uninstalling Navigator removes what the installer put there, as described in the docs.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask us for a copy of your personal data, to correct it, to delete it, to limit or object to how we use it, and to receive it in a portable format. You can withdraw consent to site analytics whenever you like with Cookie settings in the footer, and withdraw any other consent by email. Email [email protected] from the address we hold, and we'll reply within 30 days. We may need to confirm it's you first.

If you think we've handled your data badly, please tell us first so we can put it right. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.

If you live in California, you have the same rights to know, delete and correct your personal information, and we won't treat you differently for using them. We don't sell or share personal information as those terms are defined in California law.

Security

Navigator keeps your files and previews on your computer. Sentinel only reads the folders you allow, and its license file is protected against tampering. Downloads are checked against their published checksums, and links to updates only lead to approved addresses. No system is perfectly secure, so if you think something is wrong, tell us.

Children

Navigator is professional software and isn't aimed at children. We don't knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has sent us theirs, email us and we'll delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, the new version goes on this page with a new date. If a change affects how we use data you have already given us, we'll tell you before it applies.
